support in the senate and the house to avoid the fiscal cliff. we are one week away from it, as you mentioned, and republicans are not even part of the discussions, both in the senate and in the house, and at this point they are certainly maybe having a working christmas. senate democrats and republicans, but i think it's interesting just to kind of recap what's going on here. before president obama and house speaker john boehner were working on a much bigger package obviously, not just to avoid the fiscal cliff but to try and tackle the long-term fiscal health of the country, trying to overall it was expected to raise some taxes, try to deal with entitlement reform and tax reform, those other big things like entitlement reform and tax reform get kicked into the new year, dana, so it's the gift that keeps on giving on this cli clifftmas. >> taking this pretty far. one of the key questions is whether or not senate democratic leader harry reid will be able to get enough republicans in the senate to vote on anything that will keep taxes low and maybe cut some spending. is the white hou

crowley in washington with the latest on the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was a big meeting at the white house today between the president and the four leaders, two republicans and two democrats on capitol hill. senator harry reid told reporters afterwards that the next 24 hours would be very important, as he and republican leader mitch mcconnell try to put together something that would pass both of their caucuses, that republicans in the senate would vote for and that democrats in the senate would vote for. and then, of course, it would have to go to the house. now, the majority leader senator reid said he's readying a bill for a vote on monday to prevent a tax hike on incomes up to $250,000. senator reid said his bill will include all of the additional provisions that the president outlined that include long-term unemployment benefits, a continuation of those. that would be sort of the plan b for democrats simply because what they would rather do is get a bill with senator reid working in conjunction with senator mcconnell. senator reid said he's awaiting good faith propos

and democrats, we understand, are talking about right now. what else is at stake in the fiscal cliff? let's look at some other issues, things that we're not sure will be in a deal that comes out this week. at the top of that list, government spending cuts. that's about 8% to 10% in cuts to most every federal agency. also a pay cut for medicare doctors of 27% that would hit after january 1st. finally, don, there are a slew of other tax hikes. the alternative minimum tax is one that people talk about. the estate tax. these are all things that would affect average americans and which would hit on january 1st. so the fiscal cliff, it might be even bigger than people realize. don? >> lisa, thank you very much. >>> we've got a lot more planned for you this saturday night. here's what else is ahead. as our lawmakers wrestle with u.s. gun violence, chicago hits an awful milestone. 500 murders this year and counting. what's to blame? a former gang member and chicago's police superintendent join me live. >>> plus, president obama could tap this republican to lead the defense department. but not everyone w
